Alessandro Mei earned his Laurea degree in Computer Science, summa cum laude, from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1994. He later completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Trento, Italy, in 1999. Between 1998 and part of 1999, he was a research scholar in the Department of Electrical Engineering–Systems at the University of Southern California. In 1999, he joined the Department of Computer Science at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, where he currently serves as a full professor. From 2015 to 2021, he held the position of Head of the Department. Under his leadership, the department was awarded the title of "Department of Excellence" in 2018 by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, with a project on interdisciplinary applications of machine learning, led by Alessandro Mei as the principal investigator. Additionally, from 2018 to 2021, Alessandro Mei served as Chairman of the Council of Department Directors at Sapienza University.


Alessandro Mei's primary research interests include distributed and networked systems, blockchain technology, computer system security and privacy, and applications of machine learning to systems. He was a Marie Curie Fellow from 2010 to 2012, conducting research at both the University of California, San Diego, and Sapienza University. In 2012, he received the Google Faculty Research Award. Additionally, he served as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Computers from 2005 to 2009 and was the general chair or co-chair for IEEE IPDPS 2009, IEEE MASS 2021, and ACM CoNext 2022.
